Professional Wet Wall Repair After a Leak

A wet drywall ceiling should not simply be painted over. Water can weaken the gypsum core, loosen drywall tape, cause joint compound to separate, create stains, and leave sections of the ceiling soft or sagging.

Our wet Wall repair service focuses on working with your insurance company to restore the damaged ceilings. After the source of the water has been repaired. We determine which drywall can remain and which sections should be removed and replaced.

We remove wet insulation from behind the drywall and seal the framing with a mold preventer. New insulation is installed, and new moisture and mold resistant drywall boards are brought in to replace the sections that were removed.

New drywall is installed where needed, followed by taping, finishing, sanding, texture matching, priming, and painting as required. The goal is a finished ceiling where the repaired area blends into the surrounding surface. By using our 25 years of experience we work with your insurance company to restore your home to pre-loss condition or better.

Important: The source of the roof or plumbing leak should be repaired before permanent drywall restoration begins.

Everything Needed to Restore a Water-Damaged Ceiling

From removing wet drywall to the final coat of paint, the damaged ceiling can be restored without coordinating several different contractors.

01

Wet Wall Removal

Soft, saturated, sagging, or deteriorated ceiling drywall is carefully removed so the damaged area can be properly repaired.

02

Drywall Ceiling Repair

New drywall is cut and installed to replace ceiling sections damaged by roof leaks, plumbing leaks, or other water intrusion.

03

Drywall Finishing

Seams and fasteners are taped and coated with joint compound, then sanded to create a smooth transition into the existing ceiling.

04

Ceiling Texture Matching

When the existing ceiling has texture, we can reproduce or blend many common ceiling finishes around the repaired area.

05

Stain Blocking Primer

Remaining water stains can be sealed with an appropriate stain-blocking primer before the ceiling receives its finish paint.

06

Ceiling Painting

After the drywall repair is complete, the ceiling can be primed and painted for a clean, consistent finished appearance.

Our drywall Repair Process

How Wet Drywall is Repaired

Water damage varies from a small stained patch to large sections of saturated drywall. The repair method depends on how much of the ceiling has been affected.

01

Inspect the Damage

We inspect the ceiling for stains, softness, sagging, loose tape, bubbling paint, and damaged drywall.

02

Remove Damaged Drywall

Water-damaged drywall that cannot be reliably restored is cut out and removed from the ceiling.

03

Patch & Finish

Replacement drywall is installed, taped, coated, sanded, and blended into the surrounding ceiling.

04

Prime & Paint

The repaired surface is primed as needed and painted to complete the ceiling restoration.

Common Ceiling Problems

Signs Your Wet Drywall May Need Repair

Water damage does not always mean the entire ceiling needs to be replaced. The type and severity of the damage determine the repair.

Brown Water Stains

Yellow or brown rings often appear after roof leaks, plumbing leaks, or water entering from a room above.

Sagging Ceiling Drywall

Drywall that becomes heavily saturated can lose strength and begin sagging between ceiling joists.

Bubbling or Peeling Paint

Moisture behind ceiling paint can cause bubbles, peeling, cracking, or loss of adhesion.

Soft Drywall

Water can weaken the drywall's gypsum core and damage its paper facing even after the visible surface begins drying.

Loose Drywall Tape

Moisture can cause joint tape to bubble or separate from drywall seams and inside corners.

Damaged Ceiling Texture

Popcorn and other ceiling textures can loosen, stain, or fall away when exposed to water.

Can Wet Drywall Be Repaired?

Sometimes. Drywall that experienced limited moisture exposure and remains flat, solid, and structurally sound may not require complete replacement. The source of the moisture must be stopped and the area must dry thoroughly before finishing work begins.

Drywall that is sagging, crumbling, swollen, extensively stained, or separating from its paper facing usually requires removal and replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wet Wall Repair FAQ

What should I do if my drywall ceiling gets wet?

First, stop the source of the water if it can be done safely. Roof leaks, plumbing leaks, overflowing fixtures, and HVAC condensation problems should be corrected before permanent ceiling repairs are completed. If drywall is sagging or appears unstable, avoid standing directly underneath it.

Does wet ceiling drywall always need to be replaced?

No. Minor moisture exposure does not automatically mean the drywall must be removed. Drywall that remains solid, flat, and intact may be able to dry and remain in place. Saturated, sagging, deteriorated, or delaminated drywall is normally replaced.

Can you repair a ceiling after a roof leak?

Yes. Once the roof leak has been corrected and the affected area is dry, damaged ceiling drywall can be removed, patched, finished, primed, and painted.

Can you repair water damage from an upstairs bathroom?

Yes. Leaking tubs, showers, toilets, drain lines, and supply pipes commonly damage the drywall ceiling below. Once the plumbing problem is corrected, the affected ceiling can be restored.

Can a water stain simply be painted over?

Painting directly over a water stain may allow the discoloration to bleed through the new paint. After the area is dry and the damage is repaired, an appropriate stain-blocking primer is often used before finish paint.

Can you match an existing ceiling texture?

Many common ceiling textures can be repaired or blended around the patched area. The difficulty depends on the existing texture, previous coatings, age, and size of the repair.
